Tandem axle flatbed equipment trailer with wood deck built at A3 Mechanic in Apopka, FL

Trailer Sales, Manufacturing & Repair in Apopka, FL

A3 Mechanic builds, repairs and refurbishes work trailers at 4350 Hogshead Rd in Apopka, Florida, for drilling crews, utility contractors and site work outfits across Orlando and Central Florida. Three builds come out of this shop: the Flatbed HDD trailer for transporting directional drills and equipment, the Dumpster trailer for debris, drill cuttings and materials, and the Reel HDD trailer for transporting and dispensing cable or conduit reels. Repair and refurbishing cover any brand, from brakes and bearings to structural welding. Call (689) 688-6796.

Flatbed HDD trailers

The Flatbed HDD trailer is built to haul directional drills and the equipment that travels with them, and it is reinforced for that load rather than adapted from a general purpose trailer. A drill rig is heavy, it is concentrated over a short track length, and it arrives on the deck under its own power, so the deck, the crossmembers and the frame have to be right. Layout matters as much as capacity: where the rig sits, where rod and tooling ride, where the tie-down points land, and how the whole thing balances on the hitch when it is loaded the way your crew actually loads it. If the trailer also has to carry fluid or a mixing system, that gets worked into the build instead of bolted on afterwards.

Dumpster trailers

The Dumpster trailer is for hauling debris, drill cuttings and materials. On an HDD job the spoil has to leave the site, and on site work in general there is always something that needs to be moved out or brought in. This is a straightforward piece of equipment that earns its keep by being built heavy enough for the abuse it takes: loading, dumping, dragging, and being parked full on uneven ground. Sides, floor, hinges and the hoist arrangement are the parts that decide whether a dump trailer lasts five years or fifteen.

Reel trailers

The Reel HDD trailer transports and dispenses cable or conduit reels. Two things make the difference on a reel trailer, and both are in the frame. First, the structure has to be sturdy enough to carry a loaded reel over bad ground without twisting. Second, the reel mounts have to hold the reel securely in transit and still allow smooth rotation when the crew is pulling product off it, because a reel that binds or wobbles while it pays out turns into a two person job and a damaged conduit. Fiber and utility crews running long pulls are the outfits that notice that difference every day.

Trailer repair and refurbishing

Trailers get ignored until they strand somebody. The shop repairs and refurbishes trailers of any brand, and the list is the usual one: brakes, hubs and bearings, tires, wiring and lights, hitch and coupler, and structural welding on frames, crossmembers, tongues and mounts. Refurbishing is worth considering on a trailer with a sound frame and tired everything else, since a deck, a set of hubs, new wiring and a proper going over costs less than a replacement and puts a known unit back to work. Certified welding is done here, so a cracked frame gets repaired to hold rather than patched to get through the month. If the trailer is already coming in behind a truck or a machine that needs service, both can be handled on the same visit.

Choosing a trailer for your rig

A few generic points decide most of the specification, and they are worth thinking through before anybody talks about a build.

Weight, loaded. Size the trailer to the machine as it travels, with tooling, rod, fluid and attachments on board, not to the dry weight on the spec sheet. HDD trailers commonly land somewhere between 12K and 50K GVWR depending on the size of the rig.

Deck height and loading angle. Drop-deck and low-profile designs lower the deck so a low clearance machine can get on without dragging. Beavertail decks and incline ramps do the same job in a different way. The machine’s approach angle and ground clearance decide which of those you need.

Frame. I-beam frames are the common answer for heavy drill rigs because they carry concentrated load over a short span without flexing.

Tie-downs and storage. Enough tie-down points in the right places for how the rig actually sits, plus racks and boxes for rod and tooling so the crew is not loading pipe loose on the deck.

Fluid on board. Water tanks and mixing systems can ride on the trailer so the drill, the mud and the water travel as one unit instead of three.

Come in with your machine model and a description of the work and the shop will go through those points with you rather than selling you the trailer that happens to be nearest the door.

Shop or jobsite

Trailer work happens at the Apopka shop. Structural welding, brake and bearing work, wiring and deck repairs all need the trailer supported, lit and accessible, and that is what the shop is for. Mobile service exists for the machines the trailer hauls: diagnostics and many repairs on HDD rigs, heavy equipment and diesel work trucks at your yard or on the jobsite across Central Florida, with the bigger jobs coming back to Apopka.

Frequently asked questions

Which trailers does A3 Mechanic build?

Three builds. The Flatbed HDD trailer is reinforced for transporting HDD machines and equipment. The Dumpster trailer hauls debris, drill cuttings and materials. The Reel HDD trailer transports and dispenses cable or conduit reels on a sturdy frame with secure reel mounts and smooth rotation. Call (689) 688-6796 to talk through which one fits your work.

Do you repair trailers you did not build?

Yes. Trailer repair and refurbishing are regular work at the Apopka shop, whatever the brand. That covers brakes, hubs and bearings, tires, wiring and lights, hitch and coupler, deck repairs and structural welding. If a trailer has been limping along for a season, bring it in and have it gone through properly.

Can you weld a cracked trailer frame?

Certified welding is done at the shop, and structural repairs on trailer frames, crossmembers, tongues and mounts are part of it. A cracked frame is a safety problem and a roadside problem, so it gets welded properly rather than patched. Bring the trailer to 4350 Hogshead Rd in Apopka and a mechanic will look at it.

What size trailer do I need for my drill rig?

It comes down to the machine weight with tooling, rod and fluids on board, not the bare machine weight. HDD trailers commonly run from about 12K GVWR for small rigs up to 50K GVWR for large ones. Bring your machine model and what travels with it and the shop will work through the size with you.

Can a trailer carry rod and a water tank too?

That is normal on an HDD trailer. Rod boxes and racks, tie-down points, toolboxes, water tanks and mixing systems are all things that get specified onto a drill trailer so the crew is not towing two units to every job. Tell us what has to travel with the rig and it can be built into the layout.

Do you do trailer maintenance along with machine service?

Yes, and it saves a trip. If a truck or a machine is already coming to the shop, the trailer that hauls it can be inspected and serviced on the same visit: brakes, bearings, lights, wiring, tires and structure. Trailer maintenance is one of the things the certified welding and fabrication side of the shop was set up for.
